Spud Run

re to join me on the 21st Annual Spud Run to Boise Idaho, the unofficial West Coast Conference gathering of reprobates and geezers from across the western states? This fun-filled extravaganza has been a staple in hundreds of our lives for decades and if you wish to participate this year, here’s the Ca.7 itinerary:

For those of us Knights filling out our 2014 calendars, don’t forget our annual pilgrimage to Boise, Idaho this Memorial Day to commiserate and tire kick with fellow members of the West Coast Conference. This 22nd running promises nothing fancy, no formalities, and a very relaxing two days at the fantastic Riverside Hotel. Excellent restaurants abound in the area, but Joe’s Crab shack is but a 5 minute walk along the Boise River for the first night and night #2 always has a catered BBQ on site, price TBD.

Historically, this has been either a “destination” or “group” ride. If you care to join me on my trek east, let’s meet Thursday, May 22nd at the Chevron Station/Starbucks, 4490 Central Way, Fairfield for coffee. At 0800 sharp we’ll head to the Nyack Shell Station for a pit-stop and then onto the Silverado Casino in Fernley, Nevada for lunch around noon. About 1500 we’ll be at our first night’s stay, the Winnemucca Inn and Casino, 741 W. Winnemucca Bl., 775 623 2565. Ask for Government rates of $83.00 single or $93 double occupancy.

Friday May 23rd at 0800 I’ll head 70 miles to the Say When Casino in McDermitt for breakfast, change to Mountain Time past the Oregon border, then onto Jordan Valley 100 miles distant for gas. By 1500 hours, the Riverside Hotel, 2900 Chinden Blvd. Boise, Id. 83714, 208 343 1871 will appear on the horizon. Book your “Blue Knights Spud Run” reservations @ $77.00 per night single or double occupancy for Friday the 23d and Saturday the 24th.

After commiserating for two days, the beginning of a reverse-route back to California reality Sunday, May 25th at 0800 will see a transition back to PDST and my requisite overnighter @ the Best Western Inn, 1405 East Newlands Dr., Fernley, Nv. 775 575 6776. Government rates are $77.00.

As the sun rises to my back Memorial Day, Monday May 26th I’ll be 25 or more miles down the road, way ahead of I 80 holiday traffic for my 250 mile jaunt to Oakland, but not without a customary stop at Sweet Pea’s Restaurant in Auburn and a gourmet omelet.

Several factoids: We are the largest chapter in the WCC and historically have the lowest participation at this event. Washington, Canada and even snow-bound Montana shame us annually after braving the elements on their epic journeys. Ride or cage it, come solo or bring your paramour to this friendly and fun gathering. AccuWeather has always proven reliable from the Bay Area to Winnemucca, and in Idaho, from Nampa/Caldwell to Boise. However, there is a 100+ mile stretch of US 95 north of McDermitt, alongside the Santa Rosa Mountain Range and 5,300’ summit at Blue Mountain Pass, that does not have a weather reporting station. Therefore, I strongly suggest you bring 3 season gear.
